Shallow Water and WIND!

Fish use shallow water for several reasons; it warms quicker, plants grown sooner, and small fish and food is usually plentiful.

When fish are present they will usually bite quite aggressively, but being able to get close enough to them without spooking them can be a challenge.

Shallow water is usually accompanied by all sorts of obstacles, and many are not very friendly to the bottom of your boat; rocks, weeds, mud, corral, or shells make getting in these places undetected, very interesting.

Now let’s add a new situation; WIND! Just picture in your mind, floating ever so slowly and silently, all the while being so careful as to not spook your lunch, then all of a sudden, here comes the wind as you round the corner. Now what are you going to do?

Being able to completely control your boat is absolutely necessary in this situation. Movement and noise are huge factors and some of the best fishing you will ever enjoy will be a combination of shallow water and wind.

Drift fishing is one of the best ways to deal with this because it is very quiet, but being able to control your boat without scaring the fish with verbal comments can be challenging. Boats are funny creatures in that sometimes they seem to have a mind of their own and that mind doesn’t always agree with yours.

To be successful in drift fishing, you better have control, complete control.

Most bait is fished slowly, so it’s very important that your boat also moves in a slow, controlled manner. This is where the drift bags start to shine! Stealth Control at it’s finest!

Drift bags have been used in situations like this for years, but historically, shallow water has prevented you from using one that is large enough to significantly slow your boat because the water is just too shallow to support a large bag.

Shallow Water Drift BagWave Tamer to the rescue! Lindy Legendary Fishing Tackle has designed and patented a new drift bag that can be used in all but the shallowest water. With the addition of special straps, along with the patented spring in the opening, they allow this bag to be modified in a way that even a large bag can be used in shallow water and will slow your boat to a crawl.

Another benefit of this bag is that since it floats, it can be used without hanging it up on corral and shells.

The modified Wave Tamer looks like a Frisbee or disk in the water, and because it’s on the surface, it can be used in many other fishing situations. This bag will, in a matter of seconds, be deployed or retrieved, plus it can be restored to its original round shape simply by releasing the special straps.

These Wave Tamers are the drift fisherman’s reason for a full belly, yours or your boats!

Genz on Spoons

Fish slow down in cold water and a slow approach is often needed to catch them in the dead of winter.

But, it’s a different story at first ice or just before ice out, according to Dave Genz,…
