Wow, what an exciting time we live in!

With the larger, safer boats powered by incredibly high horse-power motors that get better gas mileage than motors half their size did only a few years ago.

Along with GPS and mapping devices that get you there and back safely. Literally all aspects of fishing have been influenced by our newly found technologies.

One thing that has not changed as quickly is our ability as fishermen to understand all of these new toys and gadgets by making the most of them. So what am I saying here?
Simply this, after chasing some of the world’s best fishermen around for nearly 15 years, I’ve come to the conclusion that we all have a lot to learn before we’ll be able to make the most of the equipment is available!

Preparation for the unexpected will take an otherwise wasted day or week and make it productive and fun. Weather in most cases seems to be the deciding factoring in having a successful fishing trip a successful or one that’s just a plain bust.

I would like to explain the last comments by covering just a couple of things you can do to an otherwise wasted day. Rough water means wind, this will absolutely wear you out unless you are prepared for it, and many of you know what I’m talking about.

Even with all the fancy new electronics, boats and motors today, we still need to rely on an old reliable invention; the drift bag. Drift bags remain the single most effective tool you can have aboard to deal with this problem of old man wind. The solution? In almost 90% of the time is using a good drift bag.

Fishing a break-line in a tournament a few years ago with a friend of mine and pro Mark, in rollers that were about 3’ with a bow-mount trolling motor, it was nearly impossible until we deployed a Wave Tamer 40 to the bow of his 2025 Lund Pro-V. This bag added just enough drag to keep the trolling motor in the water and we didn’t have to contend with the bow surging and hissing of the blades when they were forced out of the water by a wave. We were able to fish all day with total control.

On another occasion, also fishing a walleye tournament in Green Bay, WI, another pro’s kicker motor was damaged during a 40 mile trip in rough water. It would’ve been impossible to pull bottom bouncers and spinners using a 225hp on John’s 21’ Triton because the slowest speed was about 3 mph. By using 2 of the Wave Tamer 50’s on short towlines tied to his mid-ship cleat and stern, he was able to slow down to less that 1 mph. This was attained without losing any control of his boat and he finished in the top 5 in this MWC tournament. Without the Wave Tamers he wouldn’t have had a chance of placing.

Another occasion was trolling using lead core line, in one of the PWT’s; The fish were in flooded trees where the tops were in 30’ to 40’ of water. Speed was everything. We caught several weigh fish in the morning by trolling at 1.8 mph, as the day went on the winds picked up to about 20 mph. This made it impossible to slow down to less than 2 mph using his big motor, so in the next couple of hours, we didn’t net a fish. The solution turned out to be a Wave Tamer 50. We ran the short towline through the bow eye of Gary’s Tracker. By using the Wave Tamer from the bow, it guaranteed it would be in the center of the boat, plus is helped to anchor the bow by keeping the boat tracking straight. We were able to slow the boat to that 1.8 mph range and in the next 4 hours, we boated close to 20 weigh fish. Gary went on to win this tournament. ( we recommend using only a Wave Tamer for trolling because other bags will either blow out or collapse under the pressure)

These are only a few of the ways that a Wave Tamer can be used to help you catch more fish.

It really doesn’t matter if you’re caught in wind or just want to drift a live bait rig across a flat, 1 or 2 Wave Tamers in your boat will become your best friend that you can count on to get you through the day, fancy electronics or not.

Isn’t in interesting that even by using the most advanced technological equipment available, having a simple and reliable drift bag can save your day?

Genz on Spoons

Fish slow down in cold water and a slow approach is often needed to catch them in the dead of winter.

But, it’s a different story at first ice or just before ice out, according to Dave Genz,…
